We are back to cold days, freezing nights and snow. </span><br />

An ideal day to start the spring clean up.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cInuQkmjQ00/UTEH3mNdRiI/AAAAAAAAAxk/TKiWHFuerfI/s1600/Shed+path.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cInuQkmjQ00/UTEH3mNdRiI/AAAAAAAAAxk/TKiWHFuerfI/s320/Shed+path.jpg" width="217" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The first job was to tackle the path to the shed and compost bin. Grasses, Knautia macedonia and Corylus had flopped over the path so I had to step over/ duck under while trying not to slip on leaves. Then I had to fight through Lonicera nitida by the shed. Not anymore; I now have a clear path and the heart on the shed is straight.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I am thinking of some big change; possibly removing some shrubs, reshaping the lawn and growing some vegetables. I'm still thinking about it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SsBvJe6bWcU/US_HOlCct0I/AAAAAAAAAxQ/U5GbCLoinIA/s1600/Crocuses_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SsBvJe6bWcU/US_HOlCct0I/AAAAAAAAAxQ/U5GbCLoinIA/s320/Crocuses_1.jpg" width="216" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Crocus tommasinianus 'Whitewell purple'</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The front garden is tiny. I planted it with seedlings and cuttings from the back garden after it was redesigned a few years ago These are taking now taking over. I've removed some of the Aquilegias and Linaria. I'll remove more later. </span><br />

I like them floating in this mini goldfish bowl.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">As you can see through the window behind, we've had a light dusting of snow.</span>Gillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00034693722565334513noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90844502833868871.post-21406508761341768222013-01-21T20:47:00.000+00:002013-01-21T20:47:27.590+00:00More snow<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5XgMrgmVYoU/UP2mCADitBI/AAAAAAAAAvI/SgbRkaSnn-0/s1600/table&chairs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="274" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5XgMrgmVYoU/UP2mCADitBI/AAAAAAAAAvI/SgbRkaSnn-0/s320/table&chairs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There has been more snow since I took this photograph on 19 January. It seems we are stuck with it until the weekend when a thaw is expected. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FOQItGvyEZA/UP2m1M3fdfI/AAAAAAAAAvQ/IoBg1dBdcTY/s1600/Hydrangea+quercifolia.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FOQItGvyEZA/UP2m1M3fdfI/AAAAAAAAAvQ/IoBg1dBdcTY/s320/Hydrangea+quercifolia.jpg" width="281" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This is Hydrangea quercifolia. It is one of my favourite shrubs. It has usually lost its leaves by now but the weather has been so mild that they have stayed on. They do contrast nicely with the snow.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4jtLukYXTSo/UP2nUmzEW6I/AAAAAAAAAvg/5-SG88noXxo/s1600/jasmine2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4jtLukYXTSo/UP2nUmzEW6I/AAAAAAAAAvg/5-SG88noXxo/s320/jasmine2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Jasminum nudiflorum is very tough. A good plant to have near the house so that it can be admired from the window.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cIxc2QPHkSU/UP2nzoSkeJI/AAAAAAAAAvo/qcnQwFkjgHY/s1600/heart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cIxc2QPHkSU/UP2nzoSkeJI/AAAAAAAAAvo/qcnQwFkjgHY/s320/heart.jpg" width="305" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I made this heart from the red stems of Cornus 'Elegantissima' which grows in my garden. It has been on my shed for several months so it has now faded. I will make another in the spring.</span><br /><br />

This has made think about the birch twigs I used to display my hand sewn tiny hearts at craft fairs. I cut them down and put them in a cream metal jug. I like the contrast and it suits the room too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I also have bottle of grasses collected from the garden in the kitchen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
For a touch of summer this bowl contains dried flowers and leaves from my garden <br />

Spring was very dry, summer was the second wettest on record. The wet weather has continued throughout the year. This view through my kitchen window has been a common one.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ug0YhMlgy0Y/UOGyC88bMMI/AAAAAAAAAtg/F7fQyzuoFg8/s1600/storm3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ug0YhMlgy0Y/UOGyC88bMMI/AAAAAAAAAtg/F7fQyzuoFg8/s320/storm3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I managed to lose my bag of seeds so only had my new purchases to sow. I kept hoping I would find it but It still hasn't turned up. I really missed the sweet peas. </span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> I grew the Calendula and Ageratum pictured above. They were for cutting but I was disappointed with both of them. </span><br />

Personal things have meant a lack of time; Spring was cold and wet; Summer never really got going apart from a few days here and there.I lost my bag of seeds which I still haven't found. The only seeds I sowed were the ones I ordered this year. Here's what happened.....<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qQU-Mjpy4NU/UGAx5hR0_SI/AAAAAAAAAps/Pjz0XFF9xb4/s1600/Calendula+%27Sherbet+Fizz%27+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="304" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qQU-Mjpy4NU/UGAx5hR0_SI/AAAAAAAAAps/Pjz0XFF9xb4/s320/Calendula+%27Sherbet+Fizz%27+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Calendula 'Sherbet Fizz'</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8kHvxz18aek/UGAx6fUZaGI/AAAAAAAAAp0/dAbWN1JXl-o/s1600/Calendula+%27Sherbet+Fizz%27.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8kHvxz18aek/UGAx6fUZaGI/AAAAAAAAAp0/dAbWN1JXl-o/s320/Calendula+%27Sherbet+Fizz%27.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Calendula 'Sherbet Fizz'</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Calendula 'Sherbet Fizz' is a hardy annual. The colour is more orange than red and clashed with the pinks and purples of my garden. Lasts 5 days or more in water. I won't grow it again.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W44sOw5GIQU/UGAztOWTnWI/AAAAAAAAAp8/bkwGtB6jjuA/s1600/Scabious+%27Black+Night%27.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W44sOw5GIQU/UGAztOWTnWI/AAAAAAAAAp8/bkwGtB6jjuA/s320/Scabious+%27Black+Night%27.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scabious 'Black Night'</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Scabious 'Black Night' is also a hardy annual. I have grown mixed colour scabious for the past couple of years. They always do well and last well in water. Last year a seedling in the brickwork came up as a similar colour to this. I loved it so searched for a single colour seed and came across this one. It has a bigger flower than the previous scabious I've grown. I love it and will grow lots next year.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e6nT2gk4HmE/UGA2Jbw5_FI/AAAAAAAAAqE/ormiYqYRqrM/s1600/Ammi+majus.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e6nT2gk4HmE/UGA2Jbw5_FI/AAAAAAAAAqE/ormiYqYRqrM/s320/Ammi+majus.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ammi majus</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Ammi majus is a hardy annual and is very pretty. Prone to flopping down and has to be protected from slugs so I use copper rings.<br />
<br />
I also grew Ageratum 'Red Sea'. This is a half hardy annual. The description in the plant catalogue described it as 'dark red buds open to reveal purple red blooms.' This is correct but they are tiny and I haven't been able to photograph them. They haven't grown to the 24-28in. (60-70cm.) either but that's probably because of the the low temperatures. I won't be growing these again.<br />
<br />
I'll talk about perennials in my next post.<br />

<br />
I have a jug of <a class="headertext" href="http://www.chilternseeds.co.uk/item.php?id=1092D" style="text-decoration: none;">Rhodanthe manglesii 'Timeless Rose' <span style="color: black;">grown from seed last summer.</span></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GuvfRcYjb3k/Tx2jqZVv2iI/AAAAAAAAApE/WC2HjKKG0TA/s1600/Rhodanthejuly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GuvfRcYjb3k/Tx2jqZVv2iI/AAAAAAAAApE/WC2HjKKG0TA/s320/Rhodanthejuly.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><span style="color: black;"> </span><br />
They were easy to grow and the slugs weren't interested. Even in the garden the flowers feel papery. I grew them next to the path and cut far more than I expected. I think I had about 8 plants.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8ESZAWp_H80/Tx2kFr25K0I/AAAAAAAAApM/mTWN00-azQE/s1600/drying+in+garagebest1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8ESZAWp_H80/Tx2kFr25K0I/AAAAAAAAApM/mTWN00-azQE/s320/drying+in+garagebest1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I dried them in the garage along with Alchemilla mollis, Poppy and Nigella seed heads and Mint.<br />

These are little hearts I made with some Christmas fabric from my stash. The tree is a cheap one I bought for a display a couple of years ago. I came across it again while looking for something else. The pot is from the shed (I gave it a good clean), the ribbons are also from my stash. <br />
<br />
I hope you all have a happy Christmas and New Year. I'll see you in 2012.Gillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00034693722565334513noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90844502833868871.post-52775387795939166552011-12-19T19:55:00.001+00:002011-12-19T20:34:11.383+00:00Flowers in the Holiday House - part 2<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />

I only had time to take a couple of photographs before the clouds gathered and the light became too poor for photography. I took advantage of some bright conditions at the weekend to take some close-ups.<br />

This pot contains the <a href="http://a-small-garden.blogspot.com/2011/10/preserving-with-glycerine.html">glycerined</a> rowan leaves and berries I did in September; dried poppy heads and rose hips (also preserved in glycerine), all from my garden. I have also added cones I've collected elsewhere. The berries, hips and cones have all been wired.<br />
<br />
Both the charity shop bottles below contain grasses from my garden.<br />

I have these cones in a cream bowl during the autumn and winter months. I collected them on a favourite walk whilst on holiday in the Lake District two years ago. Every time I look at them I remember that walk.<br />

The leaves normally go a nasty grey-brown colour and fall off. This year they have turned this lovely golden colour. A result of the weather? The blackbird has been finishing the last of the berries.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Euporatium rugosa 'Chocolate'</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>I moved this dark leaved Euporatium in the Spring. I had planted it close to the house and it did not seem happy. It has only been moved a few feet but it has made a huge difference as it's new home is damper. I haven't been able to pick it for a vase before as there have only been one or two flowers. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scented leaf Pelargoniums</td></tr>
</tbody></table>These Pelargoniums have been in the garden all summer. They are not hardy so I have moved them to the sunny warm porch. I lost the ones I had last year which I kept in the garage. <br />

<br />
Three weeks ago I wrote about<a href="http://a-small-garden.blogspot.com/2011/10/preserving-with-glycerine.html"> preserving leaves in glycerine</a>. The leaves are now a lovely chocolate colour and I am especially pleased with the berries.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O2GgD57RnW0/Tq2ykDkGsII/AAAAAAAAAiw/YiqJ8wLcwYI/s1600/pink+urn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O2GgD57RnW0/Tq2ykDkGsII/AAAAAAAAAiw/YiqJ8wLcwYI/s320/pink+urn.jpg" width="204" /></a></div><br />
A new purchase from a charity shop. I think summery alchemilla and roses will look good in it next year.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ay-Ye5MI1dk/TotSsnYZlRI/AAAAAAAAAeM/WlvPa7d1pis/s1600/vase2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ay-Ye5MI1dk/TotSsnYZlRI/AAAAAAAAAeM/WlvPa7d1pis/s320/vase2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
I used one part glycerine to two parts water. I used cold water but it would probably dissolve better in warm. Give the mixture a good stir to dissolve it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wwK6XuV-uZY/TotTGAGoONI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/rdiOYOa42r0/s1600/green+leaves2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wwK6XuV-uZY/TotTGAGoONI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/rdiOYOa42r0/s320/green+leaves2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
It is a bit late in the year for deciduous leaves but these rowan leaves from the base of my tree are quite green so I thought I would try them. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gbvojCeF5xw/TotTk6FbO-I/AAAAAAAAAeU/AgiRUEBgtog/s1600/cut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gbvojCeF5xw/TotTk6FbO-I/AAAAAAAAAeU/AgiRUEBgtog/s320/cut.jpg" width="295" /></a></div>Cut the stem on a slant and put straight into the mixture. I recut the stem after I had finished photographing it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wizykH98JYY/TotUXYGpS6I/AAAAAAAAAeY/BmZXGr6j2zY/s1600/stemsinvase.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wizykH98JYY/TotUXYGpS6I/AAAAAAAAAeY/BmZXGr6j2zY/s320/stemsinvase.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
I had to make up more mixture to make sure the cut ends of the stems were covered. Now all you have to do is wait around three weeks. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qzHep2OICPM/TotVPa8rGJI/AAAAAAAAAec/9ZDnPFIJmLc/s1600/Both+leaves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qzHep2OICPM/TotVPa8rGJI/AAAAAAAAAec/9ZDnPFIJmLc/s320/Both+leaves.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
The leaves will turn brown as they absorb the glycerine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OjlwWoc581Q/TotWFCbAMyI/AAAAAAAAAeg/KEEz8kFivFU/s1600/finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OjlwWoc581Q/TotWFCbAMyI/AAAAAAAAAeg/KEEz8kFivFU/s320/finished.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
This is a branch I did in September. The leaves have turned a lovely chocolate brown and I'm glad I left the berries. None have dropped off. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hFVr9EYepy0/TotWtFpaXrI/AAAAAAAAAek/2F9iWzgcS2E/s1600/mixed+leaves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hFVr9EYepy0/TotWtFpaXrI/AAAAAAAAAek/2F9iWzgcS2E/s320/mixed+leaves.jpg" width="230" /></a></div><br />
I added acer and a cotoneaster twig to see if they would work but the acer just shriveled up. I am optimistic about the cotoneaster.<br />
<br />
I am preserving more oak leaves. If I have enough, I will show you how I made the hoop in last weeks post<br />
<br />
Good luck.Gillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00034693722565334513noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90844502833868871.post-85062403600966071932011-09-26T20:54:00.000+01:002011-09-26T20:54:32.897+01:00Flowers in the HouseJane is kindly hosting <a href="http://flwrjane-smallbutcharming.blogspot.com/2011/09/flowers-in-house-of-chaos.html">Flowers in the House</a> today.<br />

This the jug of flowers from last weeks blog. My north facing kitchen no longer gets any sun; the flowers are lasting much longer. My kitchen only gets early morning sun for about three months a year but I didn't think it would make so much difference.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pWER-zIzf0w/ToDUp10YslI/AAAAAAAAAeA/nObpX19VqZo/s1600/leaves+%2526+berries+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pWER-zIzf0w/ToDUp10YslI/AAAAAAAAAeA/nObpX19VqZo/s400/leaves+%2526+berries+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Also on the windowsill are these leaves, berries and hips. They are in a glycerine solution to preserve them. The oak leaves are some I found after the wind last week. A lot of the leaves were too dry but these are taking up the solution. The Rowan leaves are from the tree in my garden. I have no idea how the berries and rose hips will turn out.<br />
<br />

This is a hoop I made from oak leaves preserved in glycerine last year. It has lasted really well, I shall be hanging it again this year.Gillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00034693722565334513noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90844502833868871.post-63802767008164014912011-09-18T20:58:00.000+01:002011-09-18T20:58:25.897+01:00Mid September<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T1ftypxliNQ/TnZFiBCle5I/AAAAAAAAAdk/S3J5raCE5d0/s1600/border+work3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>I have spent several pleasant hours in the garden this afternoon. I hadn't planned to do any work today but the weather was warmer and drier than forecast so I thought I would make the most of it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T1ftypxliNQ/TnZFiBCle5I/AAAAAAAAAdk/S3J5raCE5d0/s1600/border+work3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T1ftypxliNQ/TnZFiBCle5I/AAAAAAAAAdk/S3J5raCE5d0/s400/border+work3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Last week I wrote about changing this border. I had removed a couple of roses and cut back the clematis. The remains of Hurricane Katrina flattened the sweet peas. They are leaning against the fence on the right.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-em-LfvGgVIM/TnZGovM0JZI/AAAAAAAAAdo/vSt-r9AlHTI/s1600/border+work.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-em-LfvGgVIM/TnZGovM0JZI/AAAAAAAAAdo/vSt-r9AlHTI/s400/border+work.jpg" width="300" />I</a></div><br />
<br />
I've removed the sweet peas.The honeysuckle and virginia creeper had grown too big so they have been cut back and some pieces of root removed. I have reduced the height of the daisies which I'll be moving later. It look a bit sad but I will be sowing hardy annuals next week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kgWM2YoC2FI/TnZJxkJQLQI/AAAAAAAAAdw/3yNzTVoJp54/s1600/mixed2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kgWM2YoC2FI/TnZJxkJQLQI/AAAAAAAAAdw/3yNzTVoJp54/s400/mixed2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

The white cosmos has been pulled out. The clary has been deadheaded for its seeds, this has made it flower again. The mint has been in the jug for about three weeks; it now has roots.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-astOfZPQO5k/TnZLajlfhsI/AAAAAAAAAd0/UEUxOmzdMug/s1600/sweetpea%2526aster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-astOfZPQO5k/TnZLajlfhsI/AAAAAAAAAd0/UEUxOmzdMug/s400/sweetpea%2526aster.jpg" width="295" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">The last of the sweet peas and asters.</div><br />

A small lupin type flower with a powerful scent. I bought the seed from Sarah Raven. It was difficult to propagate and has struggled in the dry border. It cannot be seen from the house so feels very private and hidden. I always wanted it to be surrounded by flowers but have always struggled with the bed in front of the hedge which is so dry. I am making some changes by putting in another small path for easier access with a pot of mint at the end. I am replacing the planting with drought tolerant planting.<br />
<br />
The bed by the fence has been cleared of the roses 'White Gold' and 'Aloha', these have both been very disappointing. The sweet peas have done really well, they are coming to an end and will be removed soon. I am going to sow some hardy annuals for some early flowers next year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EpSe9R9_EgE/Tmz9T_NgbFI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/L4IOFVlvIYI/s1600/scabious%2526aster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EpSe9R9_EgE/Tmz9T_NgbFI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/L4IOFVlvIYI/s320/scabious%2526aster.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Back to this year. These scabious are very close in colour to Aster 'Little Carlow'. One of them will have a new home.<br />

<br />

<br />
I have noticed that the taller flowers in the garden, such as the aster and gaura below, don't seem to have grown as tall this year. Perhaps this is due to the drier conditions?<br />
